About Parking

Nearby Car Parks
The Gala building is part of a leisure complex, high above the east of the river. Nearby car parks offer all day parking within a 2 minute walk, accessing the building via several outdoor staircases from river level. The outdoor Sands car park and indoor Walkergate multi-storey is accessed via Claypath. The Walkergate multi-storey has lifts which can be also used to ascend to street level wherever you park.

Free Street Parking
Free on street parking is available on a Sunday on Old Elvet (DH1 3HL). It's a step free walk (approximately 10 minutes) across Elvet Bridge, into the Market Place and across to the Gala. There is also limited on street parking available on Claypath. (Please note that Claypath is on a steep hill making it an easy walk down to the Gala and a harder one to get back!)

We encourage singers to car share, not only will you save a few quid on parking, more importantly, you'll help save the planet! (Please note that the park and ride scheme is not available on a Sunday.)

All singers are requested to bring a bottle of water which can be refilled for free at our drinks stations.

Refreshments in Auditorium
No cups, glasses, glass bottles or drinks containers without lids are allowed in the auditorium. During the lunch hour our choirs will be performing at various locations for 'Busking in the City'. Due to the limited time, all singers are encouraged to bring their own packed lunch. Indoor 'picnic areas' will be allocated to singers as part of our wet weather plan at either the Gala Theatre or the Town Hall.

If you have taken advantage of our pre-booked 'Cuppa & Cake' deal you will collect your ticket during registration and then collect your refreshments from our drinks stations during the morning, lunch or afternoon break. (Booking has now closed for this deal.)

About Accessibility

We are committed to ensuring that Durham Big Sing is as accessible as possible. You will be asked to state your individual requirements during booking and we will work with you to find the best ways to support you in taking part. Both the Gala staff and our team of volunteers will be on hand all day to assist you in any way we can.

Gala Theatre has lifts to all levels and accessible toilets located throughout the building including the backstage areas. 'Busking in the City' will take place at nearby outdoor locations which are all fully accessible with flat floor access. Most of the seating in the auditorium is accessed via several steps. Due to the auditorium seating configuration, the number of wheelchair spaces and flat floor seating is limited. If you require wheel chair or step-free access it is essential that you state your requirements during booking so that we can reserve an appropriate seat or space for you. We will do our best to place you in the area of the seating appropriate to your vocal range. Find out more about the seating.

The Gala operate the Sennheiser infrared amplification system in the auditorium with headsets for the hard of hearing are available at Box Office. We are able to provide large print format for the resources that will be handed out on the day. Some lyrics may also be projected onto a large screen on the stage. Please state your requirements for any hearing or visual aids during booking so we can have these ready for you.

There will be a Quiet Room available backstage for anyone who needs a break from the event at any time, for any reason. Just ask one of the team for assistance. If you are anxious about visiting a new space, we can also arrange a visit in advance with one of the Gala team to show you around.
