What is Durham Big Sing?

Durham Big Sing is a brand new event bringing together hundreds of singers from across the North East for one BIG day of singing!

With places for 500 singers of all abilities, the day will feature four massed singing workshops led by two of the region’s top vocal leaders, along with performances by choirs from across the region. Our experienced workshop leaders Sharon Durant and Simon Davies-Fidler will teach uplifting pieces from scratch to create one BIG choir which will raise the roof of the Gala’s main auditorium! Between the workshops, choirs will share their passion for group singing with inspiring performances on Gala’s indoor stage. At lunchtime we will fill the City with song, with choirs busking in the Market Place and other outdoor locations near the Gala Theatre.

Sing your heart out, engage your mind, fire up your body and fill your soul at this BIG singing day.

Who can take part?

This is a participation event for adults (aged 18+).

Durham Big Sing welcomes singers of all abilities from across the North East. You can book tickets as an individual if attending alone or with friends, or as a group if attending with 5 or more singers. You do not need to be part of a choir to take part but if you are, we encourage you to book as a group even if your full choir isn't attending or you do not wish to perform during the event. Singing leaders are also welcome to attend with or without singers from their choirs.

Which choirs can take part?

All North East choirs are invited to take part.

Durham Big Sing aims to celebrate the vibrant mix of group singing in our region. Choirs of all shapes and sizes are welcome to come along to share their passion with hundreds of others and take inspiration back home to their sessions. Singers from choirs can book as groups of 5 or more and don't need their leader or their full choir to attend in order to take part. All choirs are invited but not required to give a short performance during the day.  8 choirs have already confirmed they will be performing and will showcase a variety of musical styles, vocal abilities and geographical locations. Other choirs are bringing a small group but hope to bring their full choir to perform at future events.

Who is organising the event?

Hello! I’m Rebecca McGarvie, The Singing Elf.

I’m a vocal tutor based near Durham. I run workshops, courses and  events, along with leading Unity Choir. I’ve been involved in community music in the North East for over 15 years and I’m passionate about creating inclusive opportunities for people to enjoy singing together. I'm delighted to be bringing together my background in singing with years of experience in event management to create this brand new event for the region.

Durham Big Sing provides a new opportunity to celebrate the fabulous variety of group singing taking place in our region. The event gives individual singers the chance to sing with hundreds of others and also provides an opportunity for choirs to perform in a new setting. We hope that this first event is just the start and we're already looking at expanding into a two day 'festival style' event in 2020. We will share feedback from this event in future funding bids and use the list of choirs booking as groups to show the spread of interest across the area. If you can't attend this time make sure you sign up to the mailing list to keep up to date with our progress. If you'd like to know more about volunteering as part of the event support team please get in touch.
