Hello from The Singing Elf

Hello! I’m Rebecca McGarvie, The Singing Elf.

I’m a vocal tutor and event manager based near Durham in north east England. I run group singing workshops, courses and events for adults. I specialise in working with complete beginners; people who love to sing but aren't sure if they can! Singing has always been a huge part of my life and I believe it’s a lifelong journey; it’s never too early or too late to start and there’s no such thing as ‘I can’t sing’ – everyone has a voice, some people just need a little more help to find it. I decided to call myself The Singing Elf because I believe that elves are energetic, cheeky and just a little bit magical. I’m definitely not a traditional tutor, I like to mix things up and keep everyone (including me) on my toes, so I guess being an Elf just suits me. The Singing Elf is my business and at the moment it’s just me; I lead all sessions and I’m not part of bigger company. But I do often have wonderful ‘Elf Helpers’ - singers who volunteer to make sure our events go smoothly and help to welcome new singers. I look forward to meeting you in one of my sessions or events.

Unity Choir

Unity is a community choir for adults who love to sing but aren't sure if they're any good! We welcome all abilities including complete beginners and 'I can't' singers as well as returning voices. We sing a wide range of uplifting, feel-good music in a wide range of musical styles that put a smile on our faces. I'm incredibly lucky to lead such a friendly, hard-working and open bunch of humans. We challenge, encourage and support each other, constantly pushing ourselves to achieve things we never thought we would. Our weekly sessions are full of laughter and help to replenish my soul even during the toughest of weeks.

Durham Big Sing

Durham Big Sing is a day of workshops and performances for 500 singers at Durham's Gala Theatre on Sunday 19th May. I'm organising this brand event to celebrate the fabulous variety of group singing taking place in our region. The event gives individuals the chance to sing with hundreds of others and also provides an opportunity for choirs to perform on a professional stage. I'm delighted to be bringing together my background in singing with years of experience in event management and hope to expand into a two day 'festival-style' event in 2020.
